By Word of Mouth

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words?... You know the rest.
Perhaps whoever “coined the phrase”, was speaking it in jest.
Though words won’t break our bones, they’ll do some damage to the heart,
Piercing like a sword… a cunning viper’s poison dart.
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can break the spirit,
A deadly weapon, can’t be seen… we only need to hear it.
If the eyes are windows to the soul, the tongue reveals the heart,
We spend a lifetime taming it… a yet, unmastered art.
For what comes from the mouth, you see, reveals what is within.
Loving-kindness, honesty… or hate, deceit and sin.
The content of the heart is known by what rolls off the lips,
Wisdom and encouragement… or barbed, sarcastic quips.
The condition of the spirit, not so difficult to gauge,
A light unto the darkness… or smoldering with rage.
We value brutal honesty, and most of us have heard it.
Yet how the truth’s received depends how lovingly we word it.
We are called by God… to speak the truth, and be the light.
Perhaps we have confused the call with… always being right.
Mindful that our attitude’s reflected in our speech,
Who’s light are we reflecting… upon the hearts we reach?
Oh, that we would use our mouth, for serving something sweet,
Instead of serving as a handy place, to put our feet.
The mouth is but an instrument, the heart will write the score.
Will we leave them crying mercy?... Or will they ask for more?
Keep in mind, you will be judged… and let there be no doubt,
It won’t be what goes in your mouth, but rather, what comes out.
If you doubt the power of a word… remember, all you’re seeing,
A powerful Creator… well, He spoke it into being.

The words we choose, can heal or bruise… and so, we have a choice,
Will grace abound, will love resound… how will we use our voice?
Words in haste, can’t be erased… the wise would ponder first,
That from the heart, we will impart… a blessing, or a curse.
A voice to raise, in joyful praise, to worship Him with songs.
A heart set free, my voice will be… right where it belongs.

The mouth is but an instrument, the heart will write the score…
The Composer of the universe… by His Word, He will restore.
